A Security tool, rather than relying on a generic packet-filtering tool to manage the flow of Internet services through the firewall, has a special purpose code (a Proxy Service) installed on the gateway for each application. The tool can be configured to support only those specific features of an application that the network administrator considers acceptable while denying all other features.
Application Firewall protects the web application proactively. They try to achieve this by enforcing the pre-specified behavior of the application. It is attempted to prevent the common types of attacks as they occur. It is called a positive security model because the application behavior is controlled and ensured to be benign.
